Andy and Jamie in medal quest

Andy and Jamie in medal quest

It was never really in any doubt, but RBS ambassadors Andy and Jamie Murray have now been formally selected to represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games. "It's a great honour to be selected to represent your country," said Andy.

Andy, the world number nine, will play in Beijing in the 64-man singles event, and will be joined by his elder brother for the 32-pair doubles tournament.

Simon Clegg, Team GB 2008 chef de mission, said: "I am delighted to welcome Andy and Jamie to Team GB for their first Olympic Games. Becoming an Olympian is a unique privilege and I am sure they will gain a huge amount from their Olympic experience."

The brothers last played together at the ATP Paris Masters in Paris in October 2007 but have yet to partner each other for GB in the Davis Cup.

"The tennis event is really strong – both Nadal and Federer are taking part – but Andy and I will be doing our very best to bring back a medal for our country," said Jamie.

"I'm really looking forward to being part of the British team for the Olympics and supporting all the other athletes."

Andy added: "It's a great honour to be selected to represent your country in the biggest sporting event in the world and to have the chance to team up with my brother makes it even more special and memorable."

Team GB has enjoyed success in the tennis competition in the past, with Tim Henman and Neil Broad collecting doubles silver at Atlanta in 1996.

The tennis event in Beijing takes place from 10-17 August.
