Williams wings it for RBS top prize

Shane Williams completed an amazing season by being named the RBS Player of the Championship for the 2008 RBS 6 Nations.

The Welsh wizard, who inspired his team to the Grand Slam and a second title in four seasons, said: "I am just thrilled. Being named the RBS Player of the Championship is a fantastic end to what has already been a phenomenal tournament.

"This year's RBS 6 Nations has been a special Championship for me and for all the boys for lots of reasons – beyond our wildest dreams really – and this is just the icing on the cake."

"It is an even greater honour to know that it came from a combination of former players' nominations and fans' votes, whose support throughout this year's Championship has been sensational."

The 2008 RBS Player of the Championship was decided as a result of a public vote, hosted on www.rbs6nations.com.

Members of Team RBS (former internationals Jason Leonard, Keith Wood, David Sole, Ieuan Evans, Philippe St Andre and Alessandro Moscardi) each put forward their three recommendations (in order of preference) and these were combined to create the shortlist: Mike Blair, Vincent Clerc, Ryan Jones, Sergio Parisse, Mike Phillips and Shane Williams.

More than 19,000 votes were received in the online poll and Williams was the clear leader, earning over 55% of the public vote. Sergio Parisse was ranked in second place with 14%. Welsh captain Ryan Jones (11.8%) finished third.
