The RBS Group has been a corporate partner and national trustee of The First Tee programme since 2004, helping introduce golf and its values to more than 1.5 million young people in 47 US states and five countries – Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Singapore. Former President George Bush serves as honorary chairman.
RBS joined the award-winning First Tee Mentor Programme in 2005. Through the programme, many of our employees now act as mentors to youngsters participating in The First Tee – a commitment recognised by the National Mentoring Partnership, who presented us with their prestigious 'Excellence in Mentoring Award'.
The RBS Achievers of the Year Award recognises outstanding achievements by The First Tee participants at school and in their daily lives.
The programme awards participants who can demonstrate success in one or more of The First Tee Nine Core Values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment, through leadership, community service, teamwork, overcoming obstacles and improving school grades and attitude.
Every year, RBS and The First Tee select 14 young people to receive funding for their education. Two finalists each receive $10,000 and the eight semi-finalists each receive $1,500. In 2008, 15-year-old Kiah Underwood from The First Tee of Cleveland, and 18-year-old Demarcus Hopkins from The First Tee of Portland, were named as the two RBS Achievers of the Year during an awards ceremony at the PGA Championship.
