Jack Nicklaus

Jack Nicklaus

With 18 Major titles and 73 Tour wins in a career spanning more than 40 years, Jack Nicklaus is widely regarded as the greatest golfer ever to play the game.

For many people, he is more than that - representing the very essence of sporting achievement. Indeed, when Sports Illustrated magazine came to naming their Best Individual Male Athlete of the 20th Century, one man stood out.

We're proud to have had Jack - the Golden Bear - as an RBS ambassador since 2003. He is largely credited as being one of the pioneers of the sport, having helped turn golf into the major spectator sport it is today.

As a tribute to his achievements, on and off the course, we used his image on a special issue of two million commemorative RBS £5 notes in 2005.

That year also marked Jack's retirement from competitive golf, and he bowed out at The Open Championship at St Andrews - the home of golf.

However, his retirement from the sport has provided opportunties to develop his other extensive interests, including his golf course design, equipment and clothing businesses.
